When you think about government work the odds are good that you consider it boring, stuffy, cubicle based tedium. While that is probably an accurate depiction of many jobs in local government it seems that it is not the only kind of work out there. No, we aren’t talking about becoming the President or anything like that. As it turns out there are many awesome jobs in the government sector. Let’s take a look at ’em!
- Aircraft Flight Instructor
If you grew up watching ‘Top Gun’ then you might already know how awesome flying an airplane can be. You don’t have to be Tom Cruise to make it happen, either! There are openings for Aircraft Flight Instructors posted annually via the National Guard. The job entails training different pilots in the usage of ‘aggresive attack helicopters’. That’s one heck of a way to start your Monday.
Maybe flying an airplane isn’t up to your speed. Perhaps you prefer to do all of your extreme work inside of your own laboratory. Microbiologist’s are always in demand by the Department of Health and Human Services as well as the military. Here you’ll work closely with different microscopic organisms, like bacteria and algae, as you perform a host of interesting scientific experiments. The pay is pretty good and you’ll never find yourself thousands of feet in the air!
- General Engineer
Engineers will always be needed and they are especially utilized by the government. If you can get your degree in engineering and find your way into the Public Sector than you will probably enjoy a high paying and adventurous career. An engineers job can be applied to any number of different topics in any number of different countries in the world. Expect to travel, experiment, and have the kind of adventures you’ll love to tell your grandchildren one day. Expect to work in fields like broadcasting, telecommunications, and nuclear science.
- National Park Service Ranger
Do you love to be physically active? Do you love the great outdoors? If you answered yes to those questions then there may be no job better than that of the Park Service Ranger. In this position you will be tasked with roving over the great government owned parks in the United States, from Hawaii all the way to the mainland. You will work closely with travelers, hikers, animals, and other government employees. Your hours may be long but they will never feel more free. No office? No problem!
When it comes to careers and thrill rides combining, there is no employment opportunity quite like that of a smokejumper. As a smokejumper you will be tasked with the honorable duty of jumping out of airplanes and helicopters in order to help fight wildland fires. You will constantly be putting yourself in potentially dangerous situations but the pay is great, the hours are wonderful, and the view is spectacular. In fact, some people would pay to partake in these kind of activities!
As you can see there are many great jobs in the government. Not all positions in the government need to be filled by paper shuffling, pencil pushing, cubicle slaves. As you can see there are many exciting, cool, and adventurous careers out there for those brave enough to step forward and fill them!
