What Can You Sell Online?
The opportunities here really are limitless. It just depends on what types of skills that you have and how much money you want to invest into this new side hustle. To give you an idea of what you might be able to make money from selling, here’s a short list for some idea:
- your artwork
- scarves and other things that you knit
- any crafts or things that you can make
- antiques/used items that people might be shopping for online
- services (i.e. I’ve seen people sell handwritten thank you notes as a service!)
- baked goods (if you’re in a state with cottage laws that allow this)
- WordPress website themes
- homemade candles
- print-on-demand t-shirts and other items
- other physical products
- and more!
Those are just some of the ideas that can come up with on a spur of the moment sort of brainstorm session. But you might be able to sell something completely different.
How To Sell Products Online From Home
You have a lot of options when it comes to how you will sell in an online store.
You can go the very low investment route and sell your stuff on Etsy or another online marketplace. Of course, you end up giving away some of your profits this way. The real benefit here is that it’s a low upfront cost and it’s a site that people trust.
You can use something like Shopify, which is a very popular way to sell physical products online. This is typically how people sell print-in-demand products and how people do dropshipping. Something like Shopify does have a slightly higher upfront cost to get started. And if you’re going to do dropshipping or something like that, then you need an even bigger investment. The nice thing about Shopify is that it doesn’t require much technical skill since everything is based on templates. Though there is a slight learning curve, it is actually very easy to use.
Use WordPress with WooCommerce. For a slightly cheaper variation of the Shopify model, you can create a WordPress website and use WooCommerce to setup the site as a storefront. This is typically a slightly cheaper option and it does give you more control over the store. However, it requires more technical knowledge and more maintenance of the site. So, it might not be a good choice for everyone.
Pay for a custom storefront. If you don’t mind spending the cash upfront, you can get a totally unique and customized storefront that will really make your brand stand out from the competition. Of course, if you have the coding skills, then you can create the site on your own. However, we suggest that you look for a company that specializes in this sort of thing to get you all set up with a professional looking store website as soon as possible. London web designer Bond Media can help you with this.
Then What Do You Do?
Once you know what you’re selling and you have the store website, then it’s time to promote that store and try to get those sales coming in. Depending on what you’re selling, you could run ads online or use Instagram or another online method to get customers to your store.
Just remember to treat this side hustle like a real side job and you’ll have a real chance at seeing success. And before you know it, you just might be a full-time entrepreneur who gets to work from home all the time!
